All couples need to schedule an appointment and apply for the Marriage License online at the bottom of this page.  (The Hermiston Office does not require an appointment).  Both applicants will need to appear & show proof of identity).

If you wish to complete the process by mail instead of making an appointment, after you have applied online, email a picture or copy of both ids to the following email ddress:  recordings@umatillacounty.gov

We will respond with a link to pay by card and mail out your marriage packet upon payment. (Not recommended if your wedding is less than 10 days away).

Fees

$67.75 license fee is non-refundable and includes one certified copy as proof of marriage and/or for name changes.

Requirements/Eligibility

You must meet these requirements in order to be considered eligible to apply for a marriage license. Blood tests and medical exams are not required.

Age

  • Legal age for marriage in the State of Oregon for both applicants is 18 years-of-age.
  • A seventeen-year-old can be married if the parent or guardian gives consent. The parent or guardian must be present at the time of purchase and must bring one form of valid photo ID and the child's birth certificate.
  • Anyone not yet 17 years of age cannot be legally married in the State of Oregon.

Relations

Applicants cannot be first cousins or nearer kin.

Divorce

A license can be issued one day after the final date of a divorce. If you were previously married, you’ll need the exact date of your divorce to complete the application.

License Conditions

Licenses may be obtained in any county in Oregon, and can only be used in the State of Oregon. No extensions of time or refunds of money are made once the license is issued.

Waiting Period

There is a three-day waiting period from the day the license is purchased until it can be used.

Expiration

Once the license is effective, it is valid for a 60-day period.  (Please note:  Judges do not perform weddings at either the Pendleton or Hermiston county facilities)

Certified Copy

Once the marriage has taken place, and the completed marriage license is returned to the Umatilla County Records Department, an official certified copy of the license will be mailed automatically to the couple. Additional certified copies may be requested at the time the license is purchased at a cost of $4.00.

Legal Copies

The certified document is considered the legal copy, and can be used by the applicants to change their name on items like a driver's license or social security card.

A decorative marriage certificate will be provided. This is not a legal document and may not be used as proof of marriage. If an issued license is lost or destroyed, it can be replaced at the Records office.
